Festival-week dinner in The Grill at Oakwood Hotel near Cheltenham

Ask anyone who’s done the Cheltenham Festival: the racing is planned months ahead, the accommodation weeks ahead, and dinner… dinner gets remembered at 5:30pm on race day, standing in a taxi queue, phoning restaurants that stopped taking bookings in February. Festival week is the hardest week of the year to eat well in Cheltenham. Eight miles down the A40, it’s just a very good Tuesday.

The short version: Oakwood Hotel, on the Gloucester side about 20–25 minutes from Prestbury Park, serves proper race-week dining throughout Cheltenham Festival 2027 (16–19 March) — hearty race-day breakfasts, and post-races dinners across The Grill, The Pub and our other venues, with free parking and, crucially, tables still available when Cheltenham’s aren’t.

The Festival dining problem, solved by geography

During Festival week, Cheltenham’s restaurants operate at absolute capacity — premium set menus, early sittings, and walk-ins waved away by 6pm. None of this is the restaurants’ fault; a quarter of a million racegoers will do that to a town. The fix isn’t finding the one free table in Cheltenham. It’s leaving Cheltenham.

What dining at Oakwood during race week looks like:

[The Grill] (dining) — seasonal à la carte for the celebration dinners: the day your each-way came in

The Pub — comfort classics and a proper pint for the days it didn’t

The Drawing Room — coffee and afternoon tea for the non-racing members of the party

Sunday lunch — the traditional full-stop to a racing week, booked ahead

[Private dining](/private-dining-gloucester/) — owners’ parties, syndicates and corporate groups marking the week properly

Tommy Baldwin’s Google review sets expectations for the room: “Blown away by the experience. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, the venue was bright and professional and they had a great selection of drinks.” Add a winning betting slip and that’s a Festival evening.

Gold Cup Day dinner: the strategy

Friday 19 March 2027. The Gold Cup runs at 4pm; the roar dies down, and then 60,000-odd people attempt to leave Prestbury Park simultaneously. Here’s the veteran move: don’t fight it. Book dinner with us for 8 o’clock, take your time leaving the course, and arrive as the kitchen hits its stride — while the crowd you left behind is still queuing for a table in Montpellier.

For groups celebrating Gold Cup Day — syndicates, works outings, annual racing parties — [group tables and private dining](occasions-events) can be arranged. Book these in January, not March. We mean it.

Race-day breakfasts: the underrated leg of the treble

An opinion from the hospitality side: the racegoers who last all four days are the ones who eat properly at 8am. A full cooked breakfast before Champion Day is worth more than any tip you’ll get in the car park. [CONFIRM race-week breakfast service and timings — open to non-residents?] Guests staying with us for the week see our [Festival accommodation page] start every race day this way, twenty steps from their room.

Practicalities for race week

  • Booking: essential for evenings, all four nights — reserve via [our dining page] or +44 1452 905452
  • Parking: free, on-site — no small print, even in Festival week
  • Timing: allow for race-day traffic on the A40/A4019 corridor; later sittings are the smarter bookings
  • Dietary requirements: flagged at booking, handled properly
  • Dress: come as you raced — tweed, feathers and lucky socks all welcome

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get dinner after the Cheltenham races?

Oakwood Hotel — about 20–25 minutes from the racecourse on the Gloucester side, serving through Festival week with bookable tables and free parking. An 8pm sitting lets the race traffic clear.

Do you serve food during all four days of the Festival?

Yes — 16 to 19 March 2027 inclusive [CONFIRM service hours]. Evening tables should be booked ahead for every night of race week.

Can we book a Gold Cup Day dinner?

Yes — Friday 19 March is our busiest Festival evening, so book by January for choice of times. Group and private dining options exist for celebration parties.

How far are you from Cheltenham Racecourse?

About 8 miles via the A40 — 20–25 minutes normally, longer on race days. Far enough to escape the crush, close enough that it’s no expedition.

Do you do race-day breakfast?

[CONFIRM timings and non-resident availability.] A proper breakfast before racing is the most underrated preparation in the sport.

Can a large group or syndicate book a table?

Yes — group tables and private dining for racing parties can be arranged via the events team. January booking strongly advised for Festival week.

Is there parking if we drive over after the races?

Free and on-site — which after paying Festival-week prices all day feels almost suspicious. It isn’t; it’s just free.

Is there a dress code during Festival week?

No — racegoers arrive in everything from tweed to fancy dress and all of it is welcome.

Can we get a table without a booking during the Festival?

Sometimes at lunch; rarely in the evening. Festival week is the one week we’d say: don’t chance it, book.

Can we stay overnight after dinner?

Yes — rooms are upstairs with 10% off direct bookings, and it’s the difference between a good dinner and a great evening. See the Festival accommodation page.
